2026 Tamil Nadu solar subsidy updates

The biggest change for Tamil Nadu homeowners in 2026 is the full rollout of the Central Government's PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana through the national portal pmsuryaghar.gov.in. All residential rooftop solar applications in Tamil Nadu now flow through this portal, with subsidy released by Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) after net-meter commissioning.

  • Subsidy cap remains ₹78,000 for residential systems of 3 kW and above.
  • TANGEDCO has streamlined net-meter approvals for rooftop solar consumers through its online application workflow.
  • MNRE-empanelled vendors must be chosen from the portal vendor list for the subsidy to be valid.
  • Farmers continue to receive up to 60% subsidy on solar water pumps under PM-KUSUM Components B and C.
  • MSMEs and commercial consumers benefit from 40% accelerated depreciation and GST input credit, but not the residential PM Surya Ghar cash subsidy.

Does Tamil Nadu have its own state solar subsidy?

Tamil Nadu does not run a separate cash subsidy for ordinary residential rooftop solar. The main financial support for homeowners is the Central Government's PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which offers ₹30,000 (1 kW), ₹60,000 (2 kW) or ₹78,000 (3 kW and above).

The state government's role is to make rooftop solar easier through policy, approvals, and infrastructure: TANGEDCO clears net metering applications, TEDA acts as the state nodal agency, and DISCOMs implement central schemes on the ground.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in Tamil Nadu

PM Surya Ghar is the biggest solar subsidy available to Tamil Nadu homeowners today. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) releases the subsidy directly to the customer's bank account after installation and net-meter commissioning.

System sizeSubsidy amountBest for
1 kW₹30,000Small homes, low bills
2 kW₹60,000Medium homes
3 kW and above₹78,000 (cap)Most Tamil Nadu homes

We handle the entire PM Surya Ghar application end-to-end — from TANGEDCO feasibility to portal submission and subsidy tracking. See the detailed PM Surya Ghar Tamil Nadu guide for step-by-step instructions.

How to apply for PM Surya Ghar online in Tamil Nadu

Homeowners can apply directly on pmsuryaghar.gov.in. The standard 2026 workflow is:

  1. Register with your mobile number and verify with OTP.
  2. Enter your electricity consumer number (TANGEDCO / TNEB) and upload a recent electricity bill.
  3. Submit Aadhaar, bank passbook / cancelled cheque, passport-size photo, and a rooftop photograph.
  4. Choose an MNRE-empanelled vendor from the portal list.
  5. The vendor submits the feasibility request to TANGEDCO on your behalf.
  6. After approval, install the solar plant and apply for net-meter / bi-directional meter.
  7. Once the system is commissioned, the subsidy is released by DBT to your registered bank account.

SVN Safetech is an MNRE-empanelled solar vendor and can manage the entire application, TANGEDCO coordination, installation, and commissioning for homes across Trichy, Karur, Pudukkottai, Madurai, Salem, Coimbatore and the rest of Tamil Nadu.

TANGEDCO net metering rules for rooftop solar in Tamil Nadu

Once your solar plant is installed, TANGEDCO installs a bi-directional net meter. This meter runs both ways: it records the electricity you import from the grid and the excess solar power you export.

  • Residential consumers get 1:1 banking — every exported unit offsets one imported unit at the same rate.
  • Annual settlement is done every March. Any surplus export is paid at the average power purchase cost (usually ₹2.50–3.50 per unit).
  • Maximum rooftop capacity is generally limited to your sanctioned load or transformer capacity, whichever is lower.
  • Net meter and protection equipment costs are usually borne by the consumer and included in the installer quotation.

TEDA: Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency

TEDA is the state nodal agency for renewable energy in Tamil Nadu. It coordinates with MNRE for central schemes, promotes solar awareness, and maintains lists of empaneled vendors for government and institutional projects.

For residential rooftop solar under PM Surya Ghar, the installer must be MNRE-empanelled. TEDA does not release a separate residential subsidy, but it helps resolve implementation issues and supports DISCOMs with technical standards.

PM-KUSUM solar water pump subsidy for Tamil Nadu farmers

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) is a central scheme to help farmers install solar-powered water pumps. In Tamil Nadu it is implemented through the state nodal agency and TANGEDCO/TNEB.

MSME rooftop solar and commercial incentives in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu has one of India's largest MSME bases. For factories, warehouses, cold storages, and commercial buildings, solar offers two big financial wins:

  • 40% accelerated depreciation in Year 1 under Section 32 of the Income Tax Act.
  • GST input credit on capital goods (typically 13.8% on solar plant cost).
  • Net metering for commercial consumers through TANGEDCO (tariff and banking rules may differ from residential).
  • Potential state-specific industrial incentives and green-building recognition from SIPCOT / TIDCO parks.

Government building solar programs in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu has promoted solar on government buildings, schools, hospitals, panchayat offices, and bus stands through various state and central programs. These are typically tender-based or implemented by the Public Works Department (PWD) with empaneled EPC contractors.

  • Smart Cities Mission: Solar rooftop and street lighting in cities like Trichy, Coimbatore, Madurai and Salem.
  • Solar street lights: Municipal corporations and village panchayats install solar LED street lights with MNRE/TEDA support.
  • Government schools & hospitals: Rooftop solar to reduce electricity bills and provide backup power.

Documents and eligibility for Tamil Nadu solar schemes

Required documents vary slightly by scheme, but the core list is the same for most residential and farmer applicants:

Frequently asked questions

What is the latest Tamil Nadu government solar subsidy in 2026?

Tamil Nadu does not offer a separate state cash subsidy for homes. The main 2026 subsidy is the Central Government's PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana through pmsuryaghar.gov.in: ₹30,000 (1 kW), ₹60,000 (2 kW), ₹78,000 (3 kW+). Tamil Nadu provides policy support, net metering, and TEDA facilitation.

Is there a separate Tamil Nadu government solar subsidy for homes?

No. The main subsidy is PM Surya Ghar from the Central Government. Tamil Nadu provides policy support, net metering, and TEDA facilitation but does not add extra residential cash subsidy.

Who approves net metering in Tamil Nadu?

TANGEDCO (TNEB) approves feasibility, installs the bi-directional meter, and commissions the plant. Your solar installer submits the application on your behalf.

Can farmers get solar pump subsidy in Tamil Nadu?

Yes, through PM-KUSUM. Farmers can get up to 60% subsidy on solar water pumps. The state nodal agency and DISCOM implement it locally.

What is the commercial tax benefit for solar in Tamil Nadu?

Commercial and industrial consumers can claim 40% accelerated depreciation in Year 1, GST input credit, and net metering savings — but not the residential PM Surya Ghar subsidy.

How long does it take to get solar installed in Tamil Nadu?

A typical 3 kW residential system takes 2–4 days to install once TANGEDCO feasibility is approved. The full cycle from application to subsidy credit is usually 6–10 weeks.

Can I apply for PM Surya Ghar online in Tamil Nadu?

Yes. Register on pmsuryaghar.gov.in, upload Aadhaar, electricity bill, bank details and rooftop photo, choose an MNRE-empanelled vendor, and submit. After TANGEDCO approval, installation, and net-meter commissioning, the subsidy is credited by DBT.
