BESS Installation & Eligibility in Tamil Nadu: Home & Business Guide

Final part of the BESS series — a practical walk-through of who can install a battery storage system in Tamil Nadu, how to size it for your solar, what it costs, and how the installation actually unfolds from site survey to commissioning.

In this part

  • • Who is eligible for a behind-the-meter BESS
  • • Sizing the battery for your solar & loads
  • • Indicative costs for home, shop & factory
  • • Subsidy, GST and TANGEDCO rules
  • • Step-by-step installation process
  • • Maintenance, warranty & safety

Who is eligible to install a BESS?

Under the TNERC Draft BESS Regulations 2026 (covered in Part 1), every category of consumer is allowed to own a behind-the-meter battery:

Homes & apartments

Any TANGEDCO LT consumer with rooftop solar can add a 3–15 kWh battery.

Shops & offices

Ideal for billing counters, POS terminals, fridges, AC, CCTV uptime.

Small factories & farms

10–50 kWh systems can run cold storage, pumps, and critical lines.

Existing solar customers

Retrofit a battery without losing your current net-metering agreement.

Sizing the battery for your solar & loads

A useful starting point: pick a battery roughly 1.5 – 2× your evening critical load (in kWh), and not larger than ~1.5× your daily surplus solar generation.

GST: 13.8% effective on combined solar + battery EPC. Battery prices are falling 10–15% annually as PLI-backed domestic manufacturing scales up.

Subsidy, GST & TANGEDCO rules

  • PM Surya Ghar subsidy applies only to the solar (panel + inverter) portion.
  • Battery qualifies for accelerated depreciation when installed on commercial premises.
  • Net-metering credits only for the solar-charged exported portion (per TNERC).
  • Use a TANGEDCO-empanelled vendor to keep subsidy + net-metering eligibility intact.

  6. 6

    Commissioning

Testing, TANGEDCO inspection, meter swap, system handover & monitoring app setup.

Maintenance, warranty & safety

  • LiFePO₄ batteries are maintenance-free — no water topping or special ventilation.
  • Typical warranty: 5–10 years on battery, 5 years on hybrid inverter, 25 years on panels.
  • Ensure UL 9540A or IEC 62619-certified cells with built-in BMS for over-charge/temperature protection.
  • Install in a cool, dry, dust-free location away from direct sunlight.

FAQs

Who is eligible to install a BESS in Tamil Nadu?

Any residential, commercial, industrial, or agricultural electricity consumer with a valid TANGEDCO service connection can install a behind-the-meter battery — usually paired with rooftop solar. There is no minimum capacity for home or shop systems.

How much does a home BESS cost in Tamil Nadu?

A 5 kWh LiFePO₄ battery typically costs ₹1.6 – 2.2 lakh installed, depending on inverter capacity and brand. A complete 3 kW hybrid solar + 5 kWh battery system is around ₹2.5 – 3.2 lakh before the PM Surya Ghar solar subsidy.

Is BESS covered under the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?

No. The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana subsidy (up to ₹78,000) covers the solar panel + inverter portion only. Batteries are not subsidised today, but pairing solar (subsidised) with a battery (unsubsidised) is fully allowed under TANGEDCO and TNERC rules.

How long does BESS installation take?

A standalone home battery retrofit takes 1–2 days. A complete hybrid solar + battery installation typically takes 3–5 working days plus TANGEDCO net-metering inspection (2–4 weeks).

How long do lithium batteries last?

Quality LiFePO₄ batteries last 10–15 years with 6,000+ charge cycles at 80–90% depth of discharge. Most reputable brands offer a 5–10 year warranty.
